Internet use is increasing in AustraliaConsider the following information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and other reputable sources and judge for yourself!

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported in the 2006 Census, that Internet access had almost doubled between 2001 and 2006. At the end of the March quarter 2007, there were 6.43 million active Internet subscribers in Australia, including 5.67 million household subscribers.


Internet Increases in Popularity

AC Nielsen’s Online Consumer Press Release of 18 September 2006 gives this data from their survey:

  • 5.9 million Australians now shopping online, up 13 percent over the past 12 months
  • Average shopper spending up 19 percent to $1,900 per annum
  • The annual online spending reached a record high, with total online spending in Australia totalling $11.35 billion in the 12 months to June 20th, 2009
  • The number of consumers shopping on the Internet had jumped by 13 percent in the past 12 months to 5.9 million and, of these shoppers, over half (51%) had made repeat purchases.

 

Australians Now Third Highest Online Spenders!

 An article released by Visa card, (Visa International, 27 April 2005), further highlights the boom in e-commerce sales within Australia.

  • Australians are the third biggest online shoppers in the world behind the US & UK, and ahead of Canada & Japan.
  • We increased our spending by 38% buying products and services over the Internet between 2004 and 2005.
  • Australians spent A$617.1 million in ecommerce sales using Visa cards in March 2005, up from A$446.9 million in March 2004.
  • The average e-commerce transaction value in Australia was AUS$142.
